DBS samples[1] will be included in ADAMS as a new Sample Type selection in order to record capillary blood samples collected on DBS supports, as is already done  in the updated versions of the Doping Control Form, Chain of Custody Form and Doping Control Officer Report Form (see WADA’s website for the new forms and instructions).

Instructions for ADOs:

  1. Please note that Testing Authorities must contact the recipient WADA-accredited Laboratory to ensure that the requested analytical method(s) is/are validated and Fit-for-Purpose and in their Scope of ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation (unless exceptional circumstances apply).
  2. Laboratories and Anti-Doping Organizations must agree on which solution to use (temporary or final) when reporting DBS samples to ensure that both forms (Lab Result and DCF) match in the system.

Adding a DBS sample to a Testing Order:

        1. Login as an ADO user
        2. Click Testing Order Management
        3. Click add a Testing Order
        4. Within the form, enter the information:
          1. Test Type
          2. Period From
          3. Period To
          4. Testing Authority
          5. Sample Collection Authority
          6. Result Management Authority
          7. Status
          8. Analyses tab:
            1. Dried Blood Spot
            2. Lab (only accredited laboratories can be selected)
            3. DBS analysis type details: indicate the requested analysis/analyses (e.g. steroid esters; this can be found in the list of each laboratory’s available methods)

Adding a DBS sample to a Anti-Doping test:

        1. Login as an ADO user
        2. Click New…Test
        3. Within the form, enter the mandatory information:
          1. Planned Start
          2. Planned End
          3. Testing Authority
          4. Sample Collection Authority
          5. Result Management Authority
          6. Sport-Discipline
          7. Status
          8. Reason
          9. Click Add Analysis
            1. Sample Type: select “Dried Blood Spot”
            2. Lab (only accredited laboratories can be selected)
            3. DBS analysis type details: indicate the requested analysis/analyses (e.g. steroid esters; this can be found in the list of each laboratory’s available methods).

Adding a DBS sample to a Doping Control Form:

    1. Login as an ADO user
    2. Click New…DCF
    3. Within the form, enter the mandatory information:
      1. Date of test
      2. Testing Authority
      3. Sample Collection Authority
      4. Sport - Discipline
      5. Athlete level
      6. Sample Type: select “Dried Blood Spot”
      7. Sample Code
      8. Time of Collection
      9. Sent to Lab (only accredited laboratories can be selected)
      10. Manufacturer
      11. Manufacturer Kit: enter the model of equipment (such as catalogue number), including information about the DBS absorbent Sample support (e.g. WB129243/DMPK-C card).

Adding a DBS sample to a Chain of Custody:

    1. Login as an ADO user
    2. Click Chain of Custody
    3. Click Add a chain of Custody
    4. Within the form, enter the information:
      1. Date
      2. Lab (only accredited laboratories can be selected)
      3. Sample ID: Enter a “Dried Blood Spot” sample code

[1] A DBS sample is a series of small volumes (drops) of capillary blood, which is collected by a puncture/incision of the skin to access capillaries (small blood vessels), applied onto an absorbent sample support and allowed to dry, and not a sample spotted from a tube of venous blood at the laboratory.
